PRINCIPLES OF FORAGE & CROPS MANAGEMENT
|
- Allow newly seeded crops to become established.
- Do not graze or mow too early — allow the forage growth to reach a height of 6 in. before grazing.
- Allow sufficient time for regrowth before grazing or harvesting.
- Grass-Legume mixtures yield up to twice as much grass alone and maintain productivity over a longer period of time.
- Fertilize to maintain forage yields at a high level and to regulate the proportion of legume to grass. Nitrogen fertilizers stimulate grass growth.
- Harvest the forage at the correct stage of growth and maturity.
- Leave a stubble aftermath, or fall growth to maintain the plant in a healthy condition over winter and to trap snow.
